Roderick Bates's work is focused on bringing real-world data in line with the design process.

Roderick oversees market assessments for technology developed by KieranTimberlake, seeking out partners and developing business plans for commercialization. Following an initiative to quantify the embodied energy of buildingsā€”an effort that was recognized in 2008 by the EPA Lifecycle Building Challenge award and a poster presentation in the 2009 ASHRAE Net Zero Energy Building conferenceā€”Roderick worked with the research group to develop Tally™, an application for Revit that provides accurate life-cycle data and reporting tools to designers. 
Roderick interprets ecological, economic, climate, social, and site data to inform sustainable building design. He assists architectural teams with simulation-driven design evaluations, using the results to envision design modifications to improve a building's energy performance and thermal comfort.  
As a means of gaining accurate feedback for performance assessments, Roderick led several monitoring experiments in buildings, including Sage Bowers Hall at Yale University, Loblolly House, and Cellophane House™. Limitations of existing sensor technology led Roderick and colleagues to develop the Wireless Sensor Network, a plug-and-play monitoring hardware and software suite developed by KieranTimberlake to collect data on factors such as temperature and relative humidity in buildings. 
Roderick presents at conferences such as the Energy Forum on Solar Building Skins in Bressanone, Italy; the AIA Symposium Vision 2009: Building Commissioning; and the Carbon Neutral Design Project at the University of Minnesota. He also participates in design charrettes to facilitate discussions on high-performance design strategies.
